Doris Joy Doherty - died in Portland, Oregon, on November 30, 2010, from complications of a stroke she suffered earlier. She was 68 years old. A rosary will be held Friday, December 10, 2010, 7:00 p.m. at Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, followed by an Irish Wake at Hamley's. The funeral will be held at St. Helen's Catholic Church in Pilot Rock, Oregon, on Saturday, December 11, 2010, at 10:00 a.m., followed by burial at Vinson Cemetery near Pilot Rock. Contributions may be made to the Cowboy Christmas Ball or the American Diabetes Association through Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, PO Box 489, Pendleton, Oregon 97801, Burns Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements. Doris was born in Portland, Oregon, August 27, 1942, to Curtis and Lola "Pat" Dodd Bacon in Portland, Oregon, and lived in Arlington and Pendleton, Oregon before graduating from Pendleton High School where she was a notable swimmer. After graduation, she worked and lived in Pendleton, Vale, and Newport, Oregon, before marrying John Doherty in 1970. They lived on Butter Creek, between Pilot Rock and Heppner for much of their marriage before moving to Portland, Oregon, to be close to, and care for, Doris' aunt, Mrs. Stanley Doris McDonald. Her love of entertaining was well known; less known was her dedication to doing for others. She started the Pendleton charity event "Cowboy Christmas Ball" which began as a party but when funds were left over they donated it to charities for needy children and grew to one of the biggest charity events in the Morrow/Umatilla County area. Over the years Doris also opened her home to at-risk and pregnant teen-aged girls, providing a safe haven and getting them good medical care. Doris loved the ocean, science fiction movies, traveling, playing cards, entertaining and shopping. She was proud of her children, and later her granddaughters' accomplishments brought her great joy. She is survived by her husband, John, at the home, son Joe of Portland, daughters Michelle Packard Tony of Mt. Airy, Maryland, and Elizabeth Doherty of Portland, granddaughters Alixandra and Denali Packard, and Ellen "Ellie" McGuire, and her cousin Roy Granger, also at the home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lola "Pat" and Curtis Bacon and her aunt Mrs. Stanley Doris McDonald
