Alpha Nell Phillips – a resident of Pendleton died on Wednesday, October 6, 2010. She was 83 years old. A memorial service will be held at a later date. She was born on September 1, 1927 in Surgoinsville, Tennessee, to Frederick and Marguarite Watterson Derrick. Alpha was raised in New Plymouth, Idaho, where she attended grade schools, and graduated from New Plymouth High School in 1945. Following High School she attended Business School in Nampa, Idaho. On July 10, 1955 she married William McClellen Phillips in Reno, Nevada. They lived on a farm in Vale, Oregon, for 16 years, relocating to Pendleton, Oregon in 1971. They lived in the Pendleton area for 39 years; of that spending 15 years living on Weston Mountain, their special home. While in Vale, Mrs. Phillips worked as an office manager, in Pendleton she was a secretary in the Assessor's Office, and then as a Telephone Operator for the Pacific NW Bell in Pendleton, and Walla Walla, Washington. Alpha is survived by her husband William M. Phillips of Pendleton, OR, her daughters Nancy Daugherty of Wasilla, AK, and Kathleen Van Wagoner of Pendleton, OR, brothers Michael Derrick of Show Low, AZ, and F. D. Derrick III of Rogersville, TN, sisters Dorothy Parker of Tigard, OR, and Terri Gheen of Payette, ID, 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Franklin Derrick.

Bill and family, I am stunned to see the death notice of Alpha. It seems like yesterday we worked together at Malheur Bell in Ontario. You have my sincere sorrow and sympathy

Nancy and Family: I'm so sorry for your loss, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I have some great memories of playing with all the old phones in the back room in Vale when your mom worked for the phone company.
