Thelma Jean Ainsworth - a lifelong resident of Pendleton, died on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at a local care facility after a 20 yearlong battle with cancer. She was 84 years old. Viewing will be held between the hours of 1:00 - 5:00 PM on Monday, October 4, 2010 and Tuesday, October 5, between the hours of 8:00 - 9:00 AM, at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Pendleton. Funeral Services will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 5, at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Pendleton, with interment following at Olney Cemetery. Thelma was born on January 29, 1926 in Pendleton, Oregon, to Ray and Volma Burke VanOrsdall. Thelma was raised in Pendleton, her mother worked at the Post Office and her father worked for the State Road Department. She graduated from Pendleton High School and attended Blue Mountain Community College. She married John Ainsworth on May 9, 1948 in Pendleton, where the couple made their home. She worked primarily as a homemaker while her husband ran the Terminal Cafe in Pendleton. Earlier he had been a Chef at the Pendleton Hotel. Thelma was widowed in 1962 She dedicated herself to raising her four children, and completing her Accounting Degree. She was then employed at Comrie's Automotive and Oylear-Howard Motor Company, and also as a bookkeeper for automotive businesses in Pendleton, and Community Action Program of East Central Oregon CAPECO. Following her retirement she lived at Oregon Trail Manor, McKay Creek Estates and Willowbrook Terrace Nursing Home. She was a very caring and giving woman who loved her family and friends dearly. She was a past member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. Her hobbies included bowling, playing the French Horn, hunting, fishing and traveling. She loved to play pinochle and other card games as well as reading, but her favorite pastime was visiting with her family and especially her grandchildren. Mrs. Ainsworth is survived by: her children; John W. Ainsworth of Hermiston, OR, Joseph Scott Ainsworth of Athena, OR, Minnett V. Ainsworth Williams of Coos Bay, OR, Paula R. Ainsworth Emerson of Pendleton, OR, and step-daughter Ardell Ainsworth of Dixie, WA, a sister, Janus Crum of Pendleton, OR, her grandchildren; Sean M. Duncan, Jeremiah Ainsworth, Miranda Ainsworth, Tiffany Dodd, Paul Ainsworth, Kyle Williams, Joey Ainsworth, Rebecca Ainsworth and Hannah Ainsworth, nieces and nephews; Larry & Molli Crum, Marla & Brad Rice and Marcia Clesceri. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John Ainsworth, and a sister Lyrel Thompson.
