Mildred Irene Nicholson - a resident of Pendleton died on Friday, September 24, 2010 at a local Rehabilitation Center. She was 88 years old. Viewing will be between the hours 8:00 A.M. and 12:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at Burns Mortuary in Pendleton. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 30, in the Burns Mortuary Chapel in Pendleton, with interment following at Olney Cemetery. A celebration of life gathering will be held at the Pendleton Eagles Lodge immediately following graveside services. Contributions in memory of Mildred Nicholson may be made to the Salvation Army and may be sent care of Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, PO Box 489, Pendleton, OR 97801. Sign the online guestbook at www.burnsmortuary.com Mildred was born on November 19, 1921 in French Lick, Indiana, to Oscar and Matilda Burton Cox. She was the 8th of 11 children. After graduating from High School in French Lick, Indiana, she enrolled in Beauty School and was wed to William M. Nicholson on November 11, 1939 in New Albany, Indiana. In 1948 they moved to Billings, Montana, and then to Pendleton, Oregon, in 1959. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years William M. Nicholson April 2010, both of her parents and all siblings except Lillian Collins of French Lick, Indiana. Mildred was employed at a local floral shop and Montgomery Wards. She was a member of the V.F.W. and the Eagles Lodge as well as an active volunteer for the Bargain Counter and the Heritage Station Umatilla County Historical Museum. She loved to play Bunco and Pinochle with her longtime friends on a monthly basis for the past 40 years. She is survived by three children: Nancy Bromenshenk of Seattle, WA, Tom Nicholson and wife Avril of Pendleton, OR, and Linda Axtell Chittick and husband David of Hillsboro, OR, as well as 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, her sister Lillian Collins of French Lick, IN, and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their thanks to Dr. Dan Marier, St. Anthony Hospital Staff, and Regency Hermiston Rehabilitation Center for their compassionate care and assistance.

I had only met this fine lady a few times and had enjoyed the pleasure of her cooking on a few occasions. I know that she will be missed greatly by all she had touched. My heartfelt condolences to the family.

I had the honor of doing Mildred's hair several times & truly enjoyed spending that time with her. She is very missed!

Mildred will be missed by many. She blessed us with her presence every week at Pendleton College of Hair Design and her friendly personality, beautiful smile and great sense of humor will not be forgotten.
