Mary M. Daniels

December 26, 1919 – May 11, 2015

Mary Magdalene Daniels, 95, passed away peacefully, with her daughter Velma by her side on May 11, 2015, at Willowbrook Terrace in Pendleton.  Disposition was by cremation.  The family will remember Mary at a private family gathering and reunion that is already planned for August in Milton-Freewater.

Mary was born in Ardmore, Oklahoma, on December 26, 1919.  She was one of six children born to Jacob Silvester Edwards and Mary Elizabeth Cockrom.  Her siblings were Charles, Harvey, Alma, Neva and Bernice Edwards.  Later Mary moved to Hermiston with her family.

Mary was united in marriage in Hermiston, to Melvin Doug Daniels, of Monticello, Kentucky, in December of 1937.  Melvin predeceased Mary.

Mary was a homemaker and mother of 16 children.  Most mornings she was up at the crack of dawn making many pans of biscuits, for the children’s breakfast.  She made the best peanut butter fudge.  Mary never had much in the way of possessions, but she always kept her home spotless.

When her oldest son Jack was an infant, Mary and Melvin and the two oldest girls, returned to Oregon from Kentucky.  She spoke of camping in a tent at night, and washing the babies diapers in the river, and hanging them on the rocks to dry.  They had another family traveling with them, and Mary really enjoyed that trip.

Mary liked to take long walks around Pendleton with her daughters.  She liked to go on outings, especially if it involved driving somewhere.  She enjoyed the music on Main Street during Round-Up.  One of her favorite outings was going to Wildhorse Casino.

Mary is survived by: one sister, Bernice Kerr, in California, her daugters Arlene Schiller, Dorothy Hull, and Velma Rice all of Pendleton, OR, Martha Graham of Salem, OR, Donna Clements of Hermiston, OR, Kathy Elliott of Milton-Freewater, OR, Janet Hedrick of Richland, WA, and Susan Fisher of Stanfield, OR; her surviving sons are Ken Daniels of Stanfield, OR, Doug Daniels of Irrigon, OR, James Daniels of Kennewick, WA, and Larry Daniels of Pilot Rock, OR.  Mary leaves 36 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, and a few great-great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by: four of her children; Beverly Daniels, Alfred Daniels, Lawrence Daniels and Jack Daniels; her parents, Silvie and Mary Edwards, sisters, Alma Wilson and Neva Cook, and brothers, Charles and Harvey Edwards.

Upon her request there will be no memorial service.  At a later date her remains will be buried next to her daughter Beverly’s, in the Hermiston Cemetery.
