Melvin E. “Mel” Baker

November 4, 1925 – February 15, 2015

 

Melvin E. “Mel” Baker – a Pendleton resident passed away Sunday, February 15, 2015, at a local care facility.  He was 89 years old.

Melvin was born November 4, 1925, to Collins and Orba (Galloway) Baker in Pendleton.  He had two brothers and two sisters.  He was raised and educated in Pendleton.  He enlisted into the U.S. Navy and served his country in the Central Pacific during WWII.  After four years in the Navy he was Honorably Discharged in 1947.  On December 10th, 1962 he married Betty J. Brown, they made their home in Pendleton.  He was employed for 30 years at the Eastern Oregon State Hospital where he was an Administrative Supervisor.  Melvin was a member of the VFW Let’er Buck Post #922.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty, at the home in Pendleton, step-sons Richard R. Brown and Stephen D. Brown, both of Pendleton, and step-daughter Sharlyn Briggs of Yakama, WA, ten step-grandchildren, fifteen step-great-grandchildren, two nieces, two nephews and many friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, both brothers and both sisters.
